ATLAS ON XRPL VALIDATING, NOT STAKING

Atlas Staking runs a validator on the XRPL EVM testnet, the sidechain that brings smart contracts to XRP, and we’re waiting on the governance vote that would seat us in its mainnet validator set. That set is proof of authority, so the validators already in it vote each newcomer in. We don’t run a validator on the XRP Ledger itself, and nobody earns anything for doing so. XRPL validators receive no block rewards and no transaction fees, because the ledger doesn’t use proof of stake.

That also means you can’t stake XRP. Not with us, not with anyone. Every product advertising XRP staking is doing something else, and it’s worth knowing exactly what before you hand over your coins.

WHERE WE STAND

OUR XRPL POSITION

Atlas runs a validator on the XRPL EVM testnet, on hardware we own in Amsterdam. The XRPL EVM is the ledger’s smart contract sidechain, built on the Cosmos SDK, and its mainnet validator set is proof of authority, so a new operator gets a seat when the current validators vote for it. We don’t run a validator on the XRP Ledger itself. Anyone can run a node there. What matters on XRPL isn’t how many coins are behind you, it’s whether other operators have chosen to trust your node, and that trust is expressed through the Unique Node List.

We’re not in the XRPL EVM mainnet set yet. A seat needs a governance proposal and a seven day vote by the current validators, and that hasn’t happened, so we’ll keep saying so plainly until it does. With fingers crossed, we hope it’s soon. On the XRP Ledger itself there’s no reward for validating either way. We run the testnet node because a payment network that settles this much value should have independent operators keeping it honest.

WHAT WE RUN TODAY

No rank, no amount staked, no commission figure, because XRPL doesn’t have any of those things. Here’s what’s actually true right now.

CHOSEN BY TRUST, NOT BY MONEY

On most networks on this site, the validators that matter are the ones with the most coins locked behind them, and you can add yours to the pile. XRPL doesn’t work that way at all, and that one difference is the whole reason XRP staking isn’t a thing.

Influence comes from being trusted

Every XRPL server keeps a list of validators whose opinions it counts. Get named on enough of those lists and your node matters. No amount of XRP changes that.

0202

Validators aren’t paid at all

There’s no issuance to share and no fees to collect. Transaction costs on XRPL are destroyed rather than paid out, so running a validator is a contribution, not a business line.

So what is XRP staking, then?

It’s usually a custodial lending or yield programme, or a wrapped version of XRP on some other chain. Those can be legitimate, but the risks are the provider’s and the bridge’s, not the ledger’s.

If a service offers you XRP staking, find out which of those two it is, who holds the coins, and what happens if that party fails. Nothing on this page is financial advice.

XRPL RESEARCH

A SETTLEMENT LEDGER BUILT FOR PAYMENTS

The XRP Ledger has been closing ledgers every few seconds since 2012, with a built in exchange and a consensus design that predates most of what people mean by crypto. Read the ledger’s own material for current architecture and protocol rules.

XRP QUESTIONS

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ACTUALLY ASK

Can I stake XRP with Atlas?

No, and neither can anyone else. The XRP Ledger doesn’t use proof of stake, so there’s no validator set to delegate to and no protocol rewards to share. Atlas runs a validator on the XRPL EVM testnet, but that’s a contribution to the network rather than a staking product.

Why can’t XRP be staked?

Staking exists on networks that pick validators by counting how many coins are locked behind each one. XRPL picks them a different way. Each server trusts a list of validators it has chosen, so locking up XRP would change nothing about who validates.

Then what are all the XRP staking offers I see?

They’re generally custodial lending or yield programmes, or they involve a wrapped version of XRP on another blockchain. Rewards come from the provider’s own arrangements rather than from the XRP Ledger. Check who holds your coins and what happens if that party fails.

Is XRPL proof of authority?

No, though it’s a common guess. The XRP Ledger’s own documentation calls it the XRP Ledger Consensus Protocol, and researchers class it as a federated Byzantine agreement protocol. Under proof of authority a central party grants the right to validate and the set is fixed. On XRPL nobody grants that right. Anyone can run a validator, and every server operator independently picks the list of validators it trusts. In practice most operators start from the same default list, which is why the comparison gets made, but the protocol isn’t designed that way. Either way, there’s still nothing to stake.

What is the Unique Node List?

The UNL is the list of validators a given XRPL server trusts when deciding which transactions are valid. There’s a default list most operators start from, and getting onto it is a matter of reputation and reliability rather than payment or stake.

Is Atlas in the XRPL EVM mainnet validator set?

Not yet. We run a validator on the XRPL EVM testnet, the sidechain that brings smart contracts to XRP. Its mainnet set is proof of authority, so a seat needs a governance proposal and a seven day vote by the validators already in it, and that hasn’t happened yet. We’ll update this page when it does, and until then we’re not going to imply otherwise. With fingers crossed, we hope it’s soon. We don’t run a validator on the XRP Ledger itself.

What do XRPL validators get paid?

Nothing. There’s no block reward and validators don’t collect transaction fees. The small fee each transaction costs is destroyed rather than paid to anyone, which is a deliberate anti spam measure.

Why run a validator with no reward, then?

Because a network settling this much value needs operators who aren’t all in one place or one company. We run one for the same reason we run our own hardware, and because being useful in an ecosystem tends to come back around.

What can I stake with Atlas instead?

Check our homepage for the tokens you can stake with Atlas today. If you don’t see the token you’re looking for, contact us to let us know. We’re constantly adding support for new blockchains and we welcome your feedback.

No staking on XRPL A real validator all the same

Atlas runs its nodes on hardware we own in Amsterdam. On the XRPL EVM testnet that earns us nothing, which is rather the point. On the networks where delegation is real, your keys stay yours.
